Volunteer of the Month![]() Congratulations to Gai Williams who is the winner of The Coopers Alehouse Volunteer of the Month in April Awarded by the SARU across all clubs in South Australia For her dedication and service over the past few years Gai has won an $80 voucher for dinner at the Coopers Alehouse Well done Gai and to all our tireless volunteers at the club Warnambool Tour ReportStarting at the club from 8am Good Friday with a traditional multi-denominational full bacon and egg breakfast (thanks to Extrastaff) thirty tourists, a cross section of sacrificial virgins, veterans and rugby critics alike boarded the coach (thanks to Croplands) heading for the picturesque seaside town of Warnambool Victoria. After traveling through the Coonawarra and stopping off at the Blue Lake in Mount Gambier for a refreshing Coopers Ale the squad arrived at Beach Backpackers in family holiday central. Shortly after check in the team was picked up by the Flying Horse Tavern & Brewery (Warnambool RUFC sponsors) courtesy bus to enjoy some great boutique beers, meals and Super 14 rugby. Lesson in rugby #1: Never believe your own press! After a looooong night / morning of supporting the Warnambool economy the team awoke to find themselves in the local Saturday paper The Standard. There was only two things wrong with the article - firstly Deakin University Campus which is on the opposite side of Warnambool doesnt have a rugby ground and well, you can guess the other! After several attempts at finding the rugby ground Souths eventually arrived much to the disappointment of our opposition. The Plovers came out hitting hard from the opening whistle reflecting the DVD on the bus State of Origins Greatest Hits! Souths counter attacked by kicking into a gale force wind for the first twenty minute quarter (the first kick for touch going back about 30 meters!) and not kicking with the wind the next twenty running everything! Early in the third term Souths got their mandatory technical yellow card and even though the home side looked dangerous with the extra man Souths defence remained solid to keep the game scoreless after three quarters much to the delight of our spectators. Then someone yelled out Cattledog and the biff was brought, subs were subbed, the ship was steadied and dancing shoes were swapped for rugby boots making for three quick tries. The long whistle, a Hangi, presentations and after claiming the boat race the Souths Powerhouse left with our reputation intact. Thanks to the Warnambool Plovers, both clubs sponsors and tour organiser Paddy Williams for making it all happen (and forgetting his phone on route to the grounds!) Souths Represent At Elizabeth SevensThe longest running Sevens competition in the Southern Hemisphere was held for the 53rd time at Elizabeth on Saturday 27th March. Souths entered teams in the Mens, Womens and U18 grades. Our juniors displayed some attacking flair and strong defence but without a reflection of their efforts found themselves on the wrong side of the scoreboard in a few crucial games; Game 1: Souths 10 - Elizabeth 0 Game 2: Souths 12 - Onkaparinga 14 Game 3: Souths 15 - Vikings 17 Game 4: Souths 12 - Burnside 7 Semi Final: Souths 5 - Onkaparinga 36 A good day at the office for the Bullettes but alas only silver letting in a late try to Burnside in the dying minutes of the final to miss out on the title by a conversion; Game 1: Souths 5 - Burnside 5 Game 2: Souths 38 - Onkaparinga 0 Game 3: Souths 15 - Old Collegians 15 Final: Souths 12 - Burnside 14 The Men started off with only seven players one reserve for the opener against Onkas and when the cavalry arrived later in the day looked the goods but missed out on the semi finals by a few points. Game 1: Souths 5 - Onkaparinga 19 Game 2: Souths 22 - Brighton(B) 7 Game 3: Souths 24 - Elizabeth 7 Our Souths reps playing for the all Fijian combined team had a better day, the Bulla Boys eventual tournament winners over Brighton(A) in arguably the best match of the day with a final score 24-7. Our under 8s team was lucky enough to play Friday night on the hallowed Adelaide Oval to kick off a fantastic weekend of top class rugby. In some major upsets on the opening night Wales beat Fiji and USA shocked England eventually making it past Wales to the final only to fall short against Samoa. Congratulations goes to Rush Reynolds who won 20 Gilbert balls for the club by dressing up as Iron Man on Super Hero Saturday and Souths also won the fastest club player race. Thank you to all volunteers from the clubs for making it another successful tournament in Adelaide.
